The 2016 John Sebastiano Vineyard Bellis Noir checks in as an even split of Grenache and Syrah that was aged 18 months in neutral barrels. This medium ruby/purple-tinged red gives up rocking amounts of spiced black raspberries, olive, spring flowers, and bacon fat.
It is a brilliant bottle of wine.
Another wrinkle on the Mark Herold winery is the Acha line. The Acha is 100% Tempranillo from Lodi. Sumptuous, racy and flavourful, the 2015 packs a serious punch. The flavours are dark, bold and incisive. Varietal character comes through mostly in the wine’s structure.

Leviathan is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Merlot aged in 25% new French oak. Deep garnet-purple coloured, it leaps from the glass with exuberant black cherries, black raspberries and blackcurrants with hints of pencil shavings, black pepper, tobacco and forest floor plus a waft of tapenade. Full, firm and grainy, with gorgeous mid-palate generosity and packed with layers of black fruit and savoury sparks, it has a rock-solid frame of ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long. Approachable now yet structured to cellar, this seriously affordable, serious California blend should age 15-20 years or more. About 8,000 cases available.

This wine is dark, with hues of red and purple that are opaque in saturation. Aromatics of wild herbs stimulate the senses as you meander to a sweet nose of black cherry, blackberries, cassis, and liquid minerals.
